API vs ACEA vs JASO: Understanding Engine Oil Performance Standards

Beyond the SAE viscosity grade, every quality engine oil carries performance classifications — most commonly API, ACEA and, for motorcycles, JASO. For distributors and wholesale buyers, understanding these systems is essential to match the right oil to each market’s vehicle park and avoid specification mismatches that lead to returns or warranty issues.

API: The American Standard

The American Petroleum Institute (API) classifies oils by application and performance level. For gasoline engines, the current categories progress from SL to SN, SP and the newer SQ generation. For diesel engines, categories include CH-4, CI-4, CJ-4 and CK-4.

  • API SP / SQ — modern gasoline engines, offering improved deposit control, wear protection and fuel economy.
  • API CK-4 — heavy-duty diesel engines with EGR, DPF and SCR emission systems.
  • API CJ-4 — earlier heavy-duty diesel category, still widely used in many markets.

ACEA: The European Framework

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) uses letter-and-number sequences such as A3/B4, A5/B5, C2, C3, C5 and E7/E9. The “C” categories are designed for vehicles with after-treatment systems (catalysts and particulate filters), while “E” categories cover heavy-duty diesel engines.

European-built vehicles and many Asian brands produced for European markets commonly require ACEA specifications. Distributors supplying these markets should treat ACEA approval as a key buying criterion.

JASO: Essential for Motorcycles

The Japanese Automotive Standards Organization (JASO) sets classifications for motorcycle oils, notably JASO MA, MA2 and MB. JASO MA2 is designed for 4-stroke motorcycles with wet clutches, ensuring the correct friction characteristics for clutch performance. Using a car engine oil in a wet-clutch motorcycle can cause clutch slippage — a common problem in markets with heavy motorcycle populations.

How to Match Specifications to Your Market

The right approach is to confirm the specification demanded by the target vehicle population, then verify the oil meets it. A single product can carry multiple approvals — for example, an oil may meet API SP, ACEA C3 and a manufacturer approval at the same time.
