Modern passenger diesel engines and light commercial vehicles have specific oil requirements. Choosing the right oil protects diesel particulate filters (DPF) and keeps the engine running efficiently.
Diesel Engines Are Different
Diesel engines produce more soot and operate with higher combustion pressures than gasoline engines. Their oil must handle soot, resist shear, and protect against wear under heavy load.
Low-SAPS Oils and DPF Protection
Many modern diesel cars use Diesel Particulate Filters to reduce emissions. Low-SAPS oils (low Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus, Sulphur) are required to prevent the filter from clogging. Using the wrong oil can damage the DPF, which is expensive to replace.
- ACEA C2 / C3 / C5 oils are low-SAPS and DPF-friendly
- Always match the manufacturer’s ACEA specification
- Do not substitute a high-ash oil in a DPF-equipped car
Choosing the Right Grade
Light commercial vehicles often need a slightly thicker oil than passenger cars due to heavier loads. Viscosity recommendations vary, so always confirm the specification before recommending.
| Vehicle | Typical Oil | Specification |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger diesel car | 5W-30 / 5W-40 | ACEA C2 / C3 |
| Light commercial / van | 5W-30 / 10W-40 | ACEA C3 / A3B4 |
| Older diesel (no DPF) | 10W-40 / 15W-40 | API CF / CH-4 |
